It is important to find an appropriate sized lighting fixture for your foyer so that it doesn’t seem overbearing or peculiarly small. A general equation from Hinkley Lighting suggests that you measure the length of your foyer and the width and add the two numbers together (in feet). Now turn that number into inches and that is the general size of the foyer light you need. For example, if your foyer area is 6 feet by 8 feet you will need a foyer light with a 14 inch diameter.
Chandeliers are traditional foyer lights, but certainly not the only option. Pendants flush ceiling lights, floor lamps and wall sconces can also provide appropriate lighting for a foyer.
A foyer light should have at least seven feet between its base and the floor to avoid head bumping accidents.
Foyer lights can be tricky to clean since they usually hang well above the floor out of normal reach range. This is important to remember when purchasing a foyer light because it might be better to stay away from bowl pendants which collect dust easily and lean more towards a fixture that can be easily dusted with an extended duster.
